My name is Shivann Avasa Girdharie, I am 20 years old and a recent migrant to the United States. I was born under the astrological sign of the scorpion and those close to me will reaffirm, that I do possess many of the characteristics that represent this particular sign. In other words, I am very goal oriented, strong willed and fun loving. I have always tried to maintain discipline throughout my life and for that reason I'm always looking for new and interesting ways to challenge myself. As much as possible, I try to keep my priorities in order and at the top of that list is my family and those who I hold closest to my heart. I believe in living a healthy and pure life and for that reason have been vegan for the past 10 years and try to engage in as much physical activity as possible. I enjoy nature and all its elements and have a love for roller coasters and bunji jumping. I think that life is about having fun and making moments count, so I try to live life to the fullest and be thankful for each day as it comes!.
Adjusting to life in New York, has without a doubt been quite a challenge. It is in effect starting your life all over again, finding your place in an almost alien world. Getting accustomed to new customs and cultures, and trying to stay true to your roots... and let's face it, life in Trinidad and the American lifestyle are as different as black and white.
West Indian culture on the whole is very laid back and relaxed, but rich with tradition and warmth. Your family is the most important aspect of your life, and work never takes priority. In New York however, since my move, I have come to the conclusion that my existence would now be quite the oppsosite. I have found myself engrossed in work and school- no time for those little things that make you truly happy... Hopefully there is something to be said and gained from hard work!
